Charles Knife Canyon lookouts & drive
Charles Knife & Shothole Canyons · Lookout walks from the canyon drive — easy short paths (confirm on-site) · Half day including drive and multiple lookouts · Short walks at lookouts; drive distance from Exmouth side [VERIFY]
Guide updated · verify track status with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Charles Knife Canyon is accessed from the Exmouth / eastern side of the range. Park entry fees do NOT apply to Charles Knife and Shothole Canyon drives (verify current fee rules). Short lookouts deliver deep arid canyon views — a different Cape Range face from Turquoise Bay.
- Lookout walks from the canyon drive — easy short paths (confirm on-site)
- Half day including drive and multiple lookouts
- Short walks at lookouts; drive distance from Exmouth side [VERIFY]
- Effort: easy
- Best for: 2WD day trips from Exmouth wanting canyon drama without coastal park entry logistics for this specific drive
Distance, grade, time, open/closed status and conditions change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) before you go. Official guidance commonly restricts walks to the cooler months (about April–September) because of extreme summer heat.
Official Explore Parks WA info (verify status)Do not pair: Do not treat eastern canyons as a warm-up for Mandu Mandu in rising heat — they are the demotion when gorge walking is off.
Turnaround: One canyon done carefully with water left beats both canyons raced in dust and heat.
- Inventing pull-outs on soft shoulders for a cleaner canyon frame.
- Stacking Charles Knife + Mandu Mandu in extreme heat the same afternoon without recovery.
Official vs the sign: this page is desk planning. If the signed distance, closed gate or heat warning disagrees, the sign and Explore Parks WA win.

Where you start
Charles Knife Canyon Road lookouts (signed from Exmouth side)
Access from the Exmouth side rather than Yardie Creek Road coastal corridor. Confirm road condition, any temporary closures and fee notes on Explore Parks WA. Drive carefully on unsealed or corrugated sections; dust and oncoming traffic are normal.
How to get there
- Start from Exmouth with full fuel, water and recovery awareness. You are still remote if you break down between lookouts.
- Follow signs to Charles Knife Canyon. This eastern drive is commonly listed as fee-exempt for park entry — always re-check Explore Parks WA park-entry-fees and the park page before you rely on that planning assumption.
- Shothole Canyon is the sibling eastern drive — often paired the same day if time and road conditions allow.
- No dogs. Stay behind barriers at lookouts. Supervise children — canyon edges are unforgiving.
- Carry more drinking water than a “short drive” implies. Arid sun through a car window still dehydrates people who then walk to lookouts.
How to do it (step by step)
- Drive slowly; stop only in signed lookout bays. Do not invent pull-outs on soft shoulders or fragile edges.
- Walk signed paths to barriers only — canyon edges are not content props for a cleaner frame.
- Morning or late afternoon light sculpts the limestone; midday is harsh for people and photos.
- Do not combine with a long Mandu Mandu attempt in extreme heat the same afternoon without recovery.
- Decide at the car whether Shothole is next or whether heat says Exmouth return is the competent win.
Eastern canyons vs coastal corridor
Many itineraries only do Yardie Creek Road beaches and forget the eastern canyon drives. Charles Knife and Shothole show the dry limestone interior of the range — a different story from snorkel bays.
Explore Parks WA states park entry fees do not apply for Charles Knife Canyon access. Coastal corridor destinations still use standard park entry fees when they apply. Always re-check the official page if fee rules change.
The Charles Knife Road turn-off is about 22 km (around 20 minutes) south of Exmouth per Explore Parks WA. Caravans and camper trailers are not recommended (limited turning).
When Charles Knife wins the day
Choose eastern canyons when reef is wind-blown, when coastal camps are full, when heat says no to Mandu Mandu, or when you want geology without a long coastal transfer.
Dust, corrugations and edge barriers are the practical trio. Carry water even for “just a drive.” Canyon lookouts still punish bare heads and empty bottles.
Families and lower-mobility groups get high visual payoff without a Class 4 climb — as long as everyone stays behind barriers.
Pairing with Shothole Canyon
Most visitors treat Charles Knife and Shothole as a single eastern canyon half-day. Decide order by light and fatigue — both reward slow driving and short lookout walks, not haste.
If heat is rising, one canyon done carefully beats both done poorly. Always verify road status before you leave Exmouth.
Success metric: whole group finishes safely with water remaining, not “we tagged every signed bay in 40 °C.”
Heat, water and official advice come first. If you still need kit after the plan is solid, use the gear hub — Amazon merch is not on this trail page.

Extra tips
- Fee-exempt eastern drives are a smart first Exmouth half-day when coastal camp bookings are full.
- Pair Charles Knife + Shothole for a canyon photography day when roads are open.
- Bring a dust-tolerant car mindset — corrugations are normal.
- Screenshot official alerts and maps offline before leaving Exmouth reception.
- Turn around while the group still has water and goodwill in reserve.
- Excellent heat demotion when reef is wind-blown or Mandu Mandu is off the table.
Often paired with Shothole Canyon— only if energy and weather allow.
