Cape Range walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Start with a clear snorkel coast vs gorge rim vs eastern canyon decision. Turquoise Bay + Yardie rim or Charles Knife covers most first Exmouth day trips. Mandu Mandu is a cool-season upgrade — not an automatic first-day stack in extreme heat. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Explore Parks WA and park alerts. Extreme heat is the primary land hazard; cooler months (about April–September) are the realistic walking window for most groups.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandu Mandu | moderate | About 1–3 hours (TrailsWA); allow up to ~2 hours as a planning baseline | Fit walkers wanting the classic Cape Range gorge-rim and canyon experience in cooler months |
| Yardie Gorge | easy | 45 minutes–2 hours depending on which signed sections you take | First-visit groups wanting Yardie Creek limestone drama without a long hard loop |
| Charles Knife | easy | Half day including drive and multiple lookouts | 2WD day trips from Exmouth wanting canyon drama without coastal park entry logistics for this specific drive |
| Shothole Canyon | easy | 2–4 hours including stops | Scenic drive fans and photographers wanting arid canyon colour without a long hike |
| Turquoise Bay | easy | 2–4+ hours for a snorkel session including rest | Shore snorkellers and first-time Ningaloo Coast day-trippers from Exmouth |
| Milyering | easy | 30–90 minutes plus drive | Orientation, information and a heat-aware pause mid-coastal day |
Easy
Yardie Gorge
easyShort gorge-rim and nature-walk options around Yardie Creek — high reward limestone and creek-mouth scenery with lower commitment than Mandu Mandu. Still arid, still hot, still needs water and sun discipline. Optional boat tours on the creek are a separate commercial activity when operating.

Charles Knife

- Half day including drive and multiple lookouts
- Distance
- Short walks at lookouts; drive distance from Exmouth side [VERIFY]

Shothole Canyon
easyShothole Canyon pairs with Charles Knife as the eastern Exmouth-side canyon experience. Short stops, big geology, heat and dust realism. Fee-exempt park entry for this drive pair is commonly stated — verify live.

- Time
- 2–4 hours including stops

Turquoise Bay
easyTurquoise Bay is the high-volume shore-snorkel icon adjoining Cape Range / Ningaloo Coast. Easy land access hides real ocean hazards: currents, sun, and overcrowding at peak times. Not a “walk” in the bushwalking sense — listed so planners can link reef time with gorge days honestly.
- Grade
- Beach access — ocean and current hazards, not a mountain grade
- Time
- 2–4+ hours for a snorkel session including rest
- Distance
- Short walk from car park to beach [VERIFY]

Walks FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What should I walk first at Cape Range?
Most first visits start with short Yardie Creek rim options and/or Turquoise Bay access for the reef half of the story. Mandu Mandu is the signature gorge loop for fit walkers in cooler months — not an automatic day-one target in extreme heat. Charles Knife and Shothole are scenic drive + lookout days from the Exmouth side. Always verify track status with Explore Parks WA / DBCA.
How hard is Mandu Mandu?
Plan for moderate effort with steep uneven sections and little shade — often described with Class 4 guidance in places. Exact grade and distance must be verified on Explore Parks WA. It is harder than a flat beach walk. Official guidance commonly recommends walks only about April–September.
Can I stack Turquoise Bay snorkel and Mandu Mandu on the same day?
Only with cool weather, early starts, high fitness and honest margins. Heat on the rim plus ocean fatigue is a common failure mode. Many strong groups split walk and snorkel across two mornings. Pick one hero objective when heat rises, or keep the day to lookouts and one snorkel.
