Yardie + Mandu combined day (cooler months)

Full demanding day · Best for: Fit walkers in about April–September who want land drama over long snorkel time

Cool-season land focus: Mandu Mandu in true cool hours, recovery, then Yardie Creek rim / optional boat context — snorkel is optional dessert only if margins remain.

Mandu Mandu Gorge

This is the walker’s Cape Range day. It assumes official seasonal walk guidance is on your side and the group is honest about fitness, water and turnaround culture.

In extreme heat, do not run this plan. Switch to heat-aware lookouts and water-based options. Mandu Mandu in 45 °C is not “hardcore” — it is preventable risk.

Who should pick this: fit cool-season hikers, multi-day visitors who already snorkelled another morning, and groups that can pre-agree abort rules. Who should skip: jet-lagged first hours, mixed fitness under peer pressure, and anyone low on water capacity.

Always leave Exmouth with more water than feels rational, offline alert screenshots, and a written turnaround time. A demoted day that everyone finishes safely is still a successful Cape Range day.

Track status and weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then follow the timeline below.

Timeline

  1. 05:30–06:15

    Prep · alerts · fuel/water · depart Exmouth

If heat forecast or alerts look hostile, demote to Charles Knife / Yardie rim only. Fill multi-litre water and electrolytes. Hiking shoes on; no fashion footwear.

  2. 06:45–07:15

Mandu trailhead · turnaround rules spoken aloud

Park signed bays only. Pre-agree: turnaround time, who aborts if heat signs appear, and Plan B if gorge half is skipped. Screenshot status already done offline.

  3. 07:15–10:00

    Mandu Mandu loop (cool hours)

Signed loop only. Rim orientation then gorge sections with water discipline. Little shade. Abort gorge half early if anyone is struggling — rim success still counts.

  4. 10:00–12:00

Recovery · food · drive south toward Yardie

Do not start Yardie boat or extra scrambling if anyone is heat-compromised. Rehydrate first. Optional short rest at Milyering only if open and useful.

  5. 12:00–15:00

Yardie rim walks · wallaby viewing from distance

Signed rim/nature options. Binoculars for wallabies — no cliff approaches. Optional commercial boat if operating and energy remains; build plan so boat cancel is not failure.

  6. 15:00–evening

Optional short snorkel dessert OR return

Only if margins remain and ocean conditions suit. Otherwise return to Exmouth or camp with fuel margin. Wildlife-aware dusk driving.

  • Proper hiking shoes
  • UPF long sleeves + wide-brim hat
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • First aid + blister care

Parking & access tips

  • Mandu and Yardie both need signed bays only.
  • Do not invent parking on dunes or vegetation — signed bays only.
  • Have a Plan B node written down before you leave Exmouth.
  • Peak season: arrive Mandu early; Yardie can also fill.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Boat tour if wind cancels — rim still counts as success.
  • Long snorkel after Mandu in rising heat.
  • Charles Knife stacked on top without recovery.
  • Any Class 4 attempt when alerts or heat veto the morning.

Extra tips

Cool-season only culture

  • About April–September is the realistic walking window for most people.
  • Summer demotion is competence, not weakness.
  • Verify official walk guidance the morning you go.

Turnaround rules (speak them at the car)

  • Hard time back at Mandu car park.
  • Anyone heat-sick → abort gorge half.
  • Boat cancel → rim still success.
  • No peer pressure for “just a bit further.”

Order logic

  • Mandu first in true cool hours.
  • Yardie second as lower-commitment scenery.
  • Snorkel only as dessert if margins remain.
